This course examines select passages from the books of Samuel and Kings, Daniel, Esther, and Nehemiah, as well as background information for each book in the second half of the Old Testament. Comprehension is evaluated through lesson, thought, and review questions.

This course departs from the the use of phonics rules and presents spelling words in groups according to various domains of knowledge. Domains include (but are not limited to) world and U.S. geography, astronomy, anatomy, health, law, economics, music, buildings, and animals.

This course combines grammar and writing (in alternating chapters) to teach students both the mechanics and the use of English. Grammar topics include a study of sentences with some diagramming, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and references skills. Writing topics use the five-step writing process and include: comparative-contrast essays, persuasive business letters, diamantes, sense poems, personal narratives, book reviews, research reports, and more.

This course continues the study of the parts of speech, capitalization, word choice, and punctuation. It also expands a student’s exposure to writing through writing different types of sentences, letters, paragraphs, outlines, and book reports. In addition, students are taught how to use a dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia. Sentence diagramming is included.

This course presents a collection of short stories, American folk tales, and poetry that will take students through many important historical events of America, from the westward expansion through the mid-20^th century. Comprehension questions, extension activities, and vocabulary building are used to develop greater depth of understanding.

This course presents stories about the Earth’s hydrosphere (with an emphasis on oceans, currents, and tides) in order to develop vocabulary building and increase reading comprehension using a review question format.

This course provides students with a solid study of traditional mathematics concepts. Problem-solving strategies, critical thinking, estimation, and mental math are routinely stressed throughout. The material begins by reviewing facts regarding number and place value, and then moves into addition, subtraction, and multiplication of whole numbers; and division by one and two digit numbers. Students will also work with fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, measurement, geometry, polygons, graphs, statistics, and probability. A number of word problem sets are included.

This course uses the incremental method throughout 120 lessons to teach topics such as: whole number concepts and computation; arithmetic algorithms, geometry, and measurement; elapsed time; fractions, decimals, and percents; powers and roots; estimation, patterns, and sequences; congruence and similarity; statistics and probability; and more.

This course uses a “biographical” approach to teach United States history by looking at the impact of its chief founders and builders. From the early Viking explorers to the 2008 presidential election, students learn about famous Americans and American history.
